Samuel Wetton was a long-serving soldier being in the Army for over 26 years. He enlisted on 24 May 1817 and was born ca 1795 at Crich. There was a Crich baptism on 11 October 1795, parents James WETTON and Ellin HOSTIN (who were married at Crich 3 March 1794).

From his Army Record: enlisted on 24 May 1817, aged 22 years old, labourer; 5ft 9½; fair complexion; hazel eyes; brown hair.
After serving 12 years he signed on again for anothet three years from 1829 until 1831 after which he reengaged for another 12 years until 1843. His total service was nearly 26 years of which 1 year 4 months was served abroad in Portugal.
He was discharged aged 47 on 13 March 1843 the result of ill health.
