Hearth Tax for Crich and Fritchley 1670

Thanks to Dr Alan Wilcockson

A Hearth Tax was granted to Charles II by an Act of 1662; it was withdrawn in 1689.

The tax itself was collected twice a year at Michaelmas and on Lady Day. Every householder who was "Rated or Rateable to Church and poor", that is anyone who owned property worth 20s a year or more and was not otherwise exempt by poverty, the relief of alms or relief was liable to an annual payment of two shillings for every fireplace or stove in his house.
