The following is taken from Burdett's Map of Derbyshire 1791published by the Derbyshire Archaelogical Society. This Crich section is reproduced with kind permission from Dudley Fowkes.

You will notice that it only shows one main route through the village, from South Wingfield, through the Market Place then down to Whatstandwell and onwards to Wirksworth. This was part of the Nottingham to Newhaven turnpike.

This milestone is on Sandy Lane and one typical on the Nottingham to Newhaven turnpike road. Each turnpike had its own style of milestone.

The other main route through Crich – up Bullbridge, past the church, then onto Holloway is not shown on the map.
