Funeral of mansel Jones at Crich

Simon Johnson

The postcard is captioned 'Funeral of His Honour Mansel Jones'. The service was obviously of sufficient local importance for postcards to be produced.

The funeral shown in the postcard is that of Herbert Riversdale Mansel Jones (1836-1907), who lived at Chase Cliffe, Whatstandwell. It took place in February 1907. It seems he was called to the Bar in 1859 and was appointed judge of County Court Circuit No. 13 at Sheffield in 1902.

Herbert's son Conwyn Mansel-Jones was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1900 during his service as a Captain in The West Yorkshire Regiment during the Second Boer War.
