Whatstandwell Station Staff 1871 – 1908

Glynn Waite

The following table gives details about staff based at Whatstandwell station between 1871 and 1908 (or to be more precise staff under control of the Station Master, as he was also responsible for the signalmen at High Peak Junction). More jobs were created during this period and there was quite a turnover of staff. It is quite revealing how they moved around the country.

There are a few loose ends relating to the actual posts people came from or moved to. Around 1880 the Midland Railway started separate ledgers covering staff based in largish areas of employment - some covering individual locations, such as Derby, others covering up to six smaller locations. Unfortunately, some of these no longer exist – one in particular is that which covered Buxton and Millers Dale.

For a period of just over a year the line from Ambergate to Whatstandwell would have had four signalboxes – Ambergate West Junction, Johnson’s Sidings (opened 4th June 1883), Chase Road Level Crossing, and Whatstandwell Sidings.

The Chase Road level crossing was closed on 16 June 1884. From the Midland Railway signalling notices published on 9th June 1884:
At 12.00 noon on Monday next, June 16th the Chase road level crossing will be closed, and the use of the signals worked therefrom will be discontinued.
On the 1880 OS map below you can see the position of the signal box where Chase Road crosses the railway line.

It is thought that the crossing was primarily for the occupants of Chase Cliffe House, the three Misses Hurt, aunts of the "Lord of the Manor" – Albert Frederic Hurt, of Alderwasley Hall.

The OS map for 1900 shows the crossing replaced by a bridge:

The 1884 alterations included re-alignment from the Cromford end of Leawood Tunnel to a point just beyond the bottom of Sheep Pasture Incline, then known as Railwayend. The Railway Inn and a crossing over the railway were taken away with the re-alignment. However, while this area could well have come under Whatstandwell at that time, it looks as though the crossing just led into a field and there was no bridge across the river as there is today - so hardly a place to have a crossing keeper.

WHATSTANDWELL (BRIDGE) STATION MASTERS AND STAFF UNDER THEIR CONTROL
1871 - 1908

The dates shown in the "From" column are when the individuals took over the posts, which was invariably after a period of training. Other than where there is a resignation, death, or sacking, the dates in the "To" column are normally when they took over their next posts. Again, there would usually be a period of training, so they may have vacated the jobs at Whatstandwell two or more weeks earlier. There are certain variations to this 'rule':

a) New stations: Official appointments were not made until some time after the opening. A person could have been in situ for several weeks, or even months beforehand. The dates when successors took over gives an indication of what probably happened. (see Station Master William Stowell as an example)

b) New entrants: Many lower graded staff were initially employed on a supernumery basis, there being no official vacancies. They always needed a period of 'on the job' training in any case. This is not reflected in this listing, other than in the case of Porters (1) and (2), where new appointment records from 1868 to 1872 have been examined. This practice often led to the overlapping of occupants.

THE FIRST TWO POSTS WERE IN EXISTENCE IN 1866. ALL OTHERS WERE CREATED AFTER THAT TIME.
